Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer requests $1.1B in stimulus funds for education, services

May 22, 2009 - Phoenix Business Journal

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is asking the federal government for $1.1 billion in stimulus money, mostly for state education programs.

The U.S. Department of Education is doling out the money to cash-strapped states through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Arizona is dealing with a $3 billion budget deficit.

Brewer submitted a request for $823 million in federal money for state education spending, plus $185 million for other government services.

If approved, the state can use the ARRA money for K-12, community college and university outlays. K-12 schools and the three state-run universities have been hit with budget cuts and fund sweeps as the state deals with major budget problems.
