TITLE I - At Risk and Intervention

Santillana PD courses: At-Risk and InterventionOne of Santillana Professional Development’s goals is to ensure that “at-risk” students are not left behind by providing all educational stakeholders with the tools they need to meet their emotional, personal, and academic needs. Santillana’s PD helps teachers develop strategies, approaches, and interventions to prevent unnecessary grade retention. School-wide or targeted intervention strategies may include before-school or after-school intensive and focused instruction, summer programs, and pull-out or pull-in specialized interventions for small groups or individuals.

Addressing the Needs of At-Risk Children

978-1-60396-707-5

This session provides teachers and staff with at-risk student populations with strategies to help identify students in need of intervention and to be responsive to their needs. Examples of topics reviewed include language and cultural differences among at-risk student populations that impact behavior and learning, how to accelerate students’ academic and literacy skills to grade level standards, how to differentiate instruction to address the needs of all children, intervention strategies to prevent at-risk students from school drop out, and others. Participants develop plans to address the needs of at-risk students and learn how schools can be a model for equal opportunity.

Response to Intervention (RtI)

978-1-60396-708-2

This session outlines the research and provides a framework of the programmatic and instructional requirements of students with special needs within the framework of Response to Intervention (RtI). Participants learn the tiered approach to intervention outlined by RtI and the activities that both schools and school personnel should address. Attendees will implement the concepts presented by designing plans to improve the education of students (including those with special needs), as well as outline an RtI plan for their own students.

Differentiated Instruction

978-1-60396-704-4

This session focuses on Carol Ann Thomlinson’s work, which explains how teaching needs to address the differences that occur within students’ learning profiles. Participants explore ways in which instruction that emphasizes student decision-making and research is more natural and effective than one in which students are served a “one-size-fits-all” curriculum. Participants learn how to differentiate instruction and curriculum in three different areas: Content, Process, and Products.
